Why we made the speaker smaller, not louder

A desktop speaker does not face a room, it faces a 60 cm listening triangle. Size, placement and level matter more than another 3 dB.

Why we made the speaker smaller, not louder

Design note

The first Aria One prototype used a 5-inch cabinet. In the listening room it was convincing, with low end you could feel immediately. On a real office desk the problem appeared at once: the monitor moved up, the keyboard moved forward, and the two cabinets were squeezed either side of the screen, turning the triangle into a narrow trapezoid.

So we went back to 3 inches. The smaller driver gives up a few hertz at the bottom, but the cabinet sits securely on the desk and the tweeter reaches something close to ear height. For a position you occupy eight hours a day, that matters more than a number on a spec sheet.

The cost of a small cabinet is efficiency. We use DSP to keep the low-frequency lift within reason, preferring less weight over asking a 3-inch driver to make a stroke it does not have. Three placement curves cover against-wall, 20 cm from wall, and mid-desk; the switch is on the back, with no app required.

This is not a story about small. It is a story about just enough. Desk space is finite, and so is attention. We wanted fewer decisions, so you start listening sooner.
